M-commerce is the way of doing business transactions in the wireless net. Advancement of technology for M-commerce solutions development provide facility for paperless buying and selling of information, products and service through the website typically by using mobile phone service. The user can view the sites on his mobile phone's browser, can purchase the goods, or services over the wireless net. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a set of protocols that work with existing standards to make the Internet accessible through digital wireless devices.
When an user tries to access WAP enabled site through mobile phone , the mobile service provider authenticates him on their WAP server which in turn will transfer him to their WAP gateway. During this time the call rate will be different. The WAP gateway then transfers the user to the WAP service provider who will provide him with services such as news, e-mail etc. WAP phones have a micro browser which allows navigating the content like a conventional browser. WAP incorporates a protocol called WTLS (Wireless Transport Layer Security) which enables authentication and encryption of data. WAP phones with GSM currently connect at the rate of 9,600 bps compared to 33,600 BPS to 56,000 BPS Introduction of GPRS will bring big changes for download speed through the mobile phone. The document format is WML (Wireless Markup Language). Security becomes a great issue as E-commerce and M-commerce services take shape. Issues such as signal interception and decryption used to be security and privacy issues, but with people transmitting credit card information, making financial transactions and accessing customized and personal data with their phones it must be handled properly.
Advancement from e-mail to wireless technology has a great impact on the age of convergence. WAP enabled website design and development is the requirement of the day. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a set of protocols that work with existing standards to make the Internet accessible through digital wireless devices (typically mobile phones - surfing the web with a mobile phone.).Portals accessible through mobile phones are called mortals. Development is done using WML. WAP introduces a third element, a gateway or proxy server, into the conversation. The wireless client sends requests to this gateway, and the gateway in turn requests from the server on the wireless client's behalf. The gateway acts as the interpreter in the conversation between the server and wireless client translating between WAP and HTTP. Communication between the gateway and the origin server is carried out in HTTP 1.1, just as any normal web communication is done. Encoders and decoders located in the gateway reduce the size of information packets to be sent to the wireless client. The main differences in this model are on the side of gateway to client communication.
